Designing a bedroom for a teenager can be a challenging process. Gone are the days when you could decorate your young child’s room in a fun and creative way and have them appreciate whatever features you chose. For a teen, you need to consider that their own individual personality and style is emerging, and they will want to be more involved in the design process. You will also want to ensure that their room includes more long-lasting items in order to be cost-effective.
Here is a guide for redesigning your teen’s bedroom.
Choose an Adaptable Bed
As your teenager approaches adulthood, beds start to become more and more important. As well as needing a larger frame for your teen’s growing body, you’re also going to want to make a choice based on their sleep and comfort needs, as they may be paying more attention to their mattress and other design features. There are plenty of contemporary platform beds that can meet a growing teen’s modern and functional needs and don’t forget the headboard, side tables, and shelving so they can store and display their belongings around the bed much easier.
The more you think about a bed in the initial design process, the longer the right purchase will last, and you can avoid having to replace your teen’s bed in the near future.
Include a Place to Study
Your teen probably won’t want to do their homework, but it’s important to provide the ideal study space for them to sit and work comfortably. Think about creating an appropriate desk space and include a comfy chair that doesn’t strain their back. It can also help to position the desk near a source of natural light or away from the bedroom door so that they can get the best chance of productivity and concentration.
Don’t forget a desk lamp, too!
Think About Wall Space
Most teenagers love decorating their walls with whimsical and unique items, whether it’s personal photos, pictures, or posters of their favorite things. When arranging the room, think about how you can optimize the wall space; think lower and wider drawers instead of a tall wardrobe, for instance, as this will also increase storage space on the top and free up the wall above.
Use Bold Accents
This could be a bright rug, a bold feature wall, or quirky bedding; anything which allows personality to shine through and add a touch of color and boldness to the room. Accents can be added in many ways, even if it’s just a few throw cushions on top of the bedspread.
Don’t Overcrowd the Room
Teenagers will need space. They will be developing new skills and areas of interest as they go along. Fill and decorate the room as much as is needed, but ensure that there’s also space for your teenager to add new features themselves over the years. Also remember to leave storage space in case your teen needs room for a new interest, such as a guitar propped in the corner, a new bookshelf, or a gaming station.
