It’s been quite the year. One I hope we never have to redo in our lifetime. Here are a few old wives tales I’ll be using on New Years Eve and to welcome the New Year.
1. All doors and windows of the house must be open at midnight to usher out the old year, which clears the way for a promising new year to enter with a fresh, untainted beginning.
2. Make lots of noise at midnight. The superstition is that making loud noise at midnight will scare evil spirits and omens away.
3. A Polish tradition states that if you touch the floor with the right foot when getting up from bed on New Years Day, you can expect a lot of good luck for whole new year.
4. Those who do laundry on the first day of a new year are said to run the risk of washing off any good luck they may otherwise have experienced during the coming year.
5. Put off sweeping or dusting until the new year has had a chance to settle in to your home, the day after New Years. The superstition is that, you could end up sweeping your good luck out with the dust.
5. Wearing something new on January 1 to increase the likelihood of your receiving more new garments during the year to follow.
6. It is believed that eating black-eyed peas, ham hocks, and collard greens or cabbage on New Year’s Day will attract a financial windfall.
7. Eating anything that forms a circle—such as donuts and bagels—leads to good fortune in the coming year.
Do you have any superstitions for the New Year? If so let us know in the comments.
