Divorce can be an extremely difficult and emotionally challenging time for children. While many kids are resilient and able to adjust well after their parents split up, it’s also common for children to exhibit behavioural issues or other problems as they cope with this major life change. Here are some of the most common behavioural concerns that may arise for kids whose parents have divorced.
One frequent response is for children to start “acting out” through difficult behaviours. This could include increased anger and aggression, tantrums, defiance, and deliberately breaking rules or norms they previously followed. Acting out behaviors reflect children’s internal confusion, distress and insecurity after their family unit dissolves. These behaviors may be a plea for attention from distracted parents or an attempt to regain a sense of control.
Younger children in particular often start regressing or reverting back to behaviors they had previously outgrown. For example, a potty-trained child may start having accidents again, or a child may resume sucking their thumb or wanting a pacifier or bottle. Regressive behaviors are an expression of insecurity and a desire to return to the safety of when they were younger, before their parents separated.
Many kids struggle to concentrate and focus on schoolwork after dealing with the stress and disruption of divorce at home. Their school performance may decline, homework becomes a battleground, and teachers may report increased restlessness. Divorce introduces major emotional upheaval, uncertainty and changes to kids’ daily routines and environment, which understandably makes it far harder for them to focus at school.
Some children will become more withdrawn after divorce, appearing sad, lonely and disengaged from friends and activities they used to enjoy. This reflects their emotional hurt and sense of loss, especially if they lost the constant presence of a parent through joint custody arrangements. Withdrawal can also stem from feelings of rejection if kids blame themselves for the divorce.
Stressful life events like divorce can cause physical complaints in children, including headaches, stomach aches, changes in eating and sleeping habits, and unexplained pains. These physical symptoms are the body’s way of manifesting emotional upset. Kids may also feign illness to get attention or stay home from school to avoid distress there.
Many kids understandably become more anxious after the instability of divorce, which is something parenting coaching experts see a lot of. They may worry about finances, their family’s future, whether they’ll have to move, or that other bad things will happen. Younger children may become clingy or fearful about separation from their primary parent. Older kids may obsess over grim divorce statistics. These anxious behaviors reflect their need for reassurance.
If parents are openly hostile or vying for kids’ loyalty, children are put in the unfair position of feeling pressured to choose or reject a parent. The stress can cause kids to alternate between behavioral extremes, either wanting nothing to do with one parent or refusing to see the other. Coping with kids’ behavioral problems post-divorce requires patience, empathy, communication and professional help from a parent coaching expert as needed. However, understanding the root causes of these behaviors allows parents to address them in constructive ways and help their children adjust.
